Toyota's Corolla has been one of the best-selling vehicles in America for decades, and the 2016 Corolla is keeping with that tradition. The Corolla trounces rivals like the Hyundai Elantra, which has still not reached its full potential.
Toyota has made the Corolla sedan one of America's best-selling vehicles over the years, and one of the biggest reasons why drivers continue to pick the Corolla over its competitors is due to its smooth ride and reactive driving dynamics. The 2016 Toyota Corolla features an electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system that is crisp and responsive. The Corolla's independent MacPherson front struts and torsion beam rear suspension both feature stabilizer bars that make this little sedan a pleasure to drive whether you are in the city or heading out of town on the highway. By contrast, steering and ride quality have never been strong suits for the Hyundai Elantra, and the 2016 model is â€" unfortunately for Hyundai â€" no different, the Elantra struggles to provide drivers with anything but a numb and detached driving experience, and that's even with updated to the steering system added this year. Looks like the 2016 Corolla wins this round!
You might think that, in such an inexpensive car, you won't be getting too many features as standard, but if you are talking about the 2016 Toyota Corolla, you would be wrong. The 2016 Corolla is a great value and comes packed full of features, even in most affordable trims, that the Hyundai Elantra either doesn't offer or makes you pay extra to get. For example, the Toyota Corolla LE (which is one step up from the base trim) offers standard automatic climate control, a rearview camera, Bluetooth hands-free audio streaming and phone access, and an easy-to-use Entune display audio system with a Multimedia bundle which includes a 6.1†touchscreen display, six speakers, auxiliary audio input, a USB 2.0 port and iPod connectivity, voice recognition, Siri Eyes Free, and HD radio. The Hyundai Elantra SE does not offer Automatic climate control at all (you need to move up to the Limited trim) and only makes its rearview camera, Bluetooth, and voice commands optional additions that you must pay more to get. You also won't find an in-car telematics system, HD radio, or even a standard display screen in the Hyundai Elantra SE. The 2016 Toyota Corolla is a much better value if you are looking for a lot of standard features.
While it is true that both the 2016 Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra were given five-star overall scores by the NHTSA, the Toyota Corolla has many more individual five-star scores than the Hyundai Elantra. The Toyota Corolla earned five-stars in the overall frontal barrier crash test, the passenger-side frontal barrier crash test, driver's side barrier crash test, and the combined front-seat side crash tests. The Hyundai Elantra only earned four stars in each of those tests as well as in the rollover test. The rollover test was the only NHTSA crash test in which the 2016 Toyota Corolla earned four stars. The 2016 Toyota Corolla also comes with eight standard airbags, one more than the Hyundai Elantra offers. And again, you also don't get a standard rearview camera in the Hyundai Elantra unless you spring for the more expensive Limited model. If you have safety on your mind, and what driver doesn't, you should definitely pick the 2016 Toyota Corolla.
The 2016 Toyota Corolla is still one of the best choices for drivers looking for a compact vehicle that is loaded with standard features for convenience and safety, pleasant to drive, and affordable on almost any budget.
